Qigong for Wellness

The Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning classes are a 60-minute introduction to Qigong.

Qigong is one of the branches of Traditional Chinese medicine. It’s a soft, gentle exercise that nurtures, builds, and maintains your vital energy. Keep your body and mind supple, flexible and agile from the inside out. The practices are simple and easy to learn and have subtle and profound results.

Along the way, learn about Traditional Chinese medicine and Daoist philosophy and how these practices maintain health and fitness. This class is for anyone, men and women, young and old. Come along and have fun!

Weekly sessions alternate between Zhan Zhuang or standing still meditation, Ba Duan Jin or the Eight Brocades sequence, Shi Er Duan Jin or the Twelve Brocades sequence, Meihua Quan Kung Fu practices and diverse Qigong exercises. Each session focuses on stimulating acupoints, strengthening the meridian system and balancing Yin-Yang energy. This is a wonderful way to start or end your day.

Yoga For Any Body

The Monday, Tuesday and Thursday classes are 90-minutes of traditional yoga and a powerful way to bring the body, breath and mind into balance. They are a complete practice with deep holds, slow flow and gentle recovery. The Asanas (poses) are followed by Pranayama (breathing exercises) and Yoga Nidra (deep active relaxation).

Chair Yoga

This Wednesday morning class is a 45-minute inclusive practice that builds strength, flexibility and mental wellbeing.

The class includes a range of poses that open and stretch the body, develop your mobility, bring a smile to your face and keep your motor humming. Also included are a range of chair based Taiji and Qigong exercises, as well as breathing exercises and seated relaxation techniques.

A lovely way to boost your day.

Partner Yoga

This Thursday afternoon Partner Yoga class is not only the opportunity to use another person’s bodyweight to gently move you deeper into a pose, but it is also the building of trust, intuitive communication, body awareness and strength through vulnerability.

Partner yoga is perfect for the householder, whose life is not one of a solitary yogi, but one of strengthening social connections, intimacy and relationships.

This class is perfect for couples, friends, and parents / kids. Come along with your chosen partner to the class, as well as a good sense of humour. :)

Rise and Shine Yoga

Start the day with a smile and a bounce in your step. This Wednesday morning 60-minute yoga class gets your body, mind and breath ready for the day ahead. We’ll move through a few select Pawanmuktasana Series 1-3 warmup poses, a few rounds of Salute to the Sun or Salute to the Moon, and finish it off with breathwork and a short inspiring meditation. A healthy, focused and balanced way to start your day.

What is the Pawanmuktasana Series? If you’re new to yoga or just want to prepare your body for your yoga class, the PMA Series 1-3 is dedicated to opening the joints, strengthening digestion and energising flow through the spine and body.

Perfect as a preparatory sequence for beginners, as well as experienced yogis.

Move Naturally

These Tuesday morning 45-minute mobility, stretch and bodyweight sessions are designed to build body awareness, coordination, strength, agility and flexibility.

They are for any body, any age, any fitness level, and are based on having fun and playing around with your body.

Each class contains a mix of natural movement, bodyweight, yoga, qigong, fascial fitness and martial arts. If you push your body or are starting to feel your age, come along and work on ironing out the kinks in a safe and gentle environment.

Open Class

An Open class is based on the Mysore style of yoga concept - (see brief description below).

Yoga was originally taught in a one-on-one setting. However, when yoga reached the West and there was an explosion of interest among enthusiasts, group settings became the norm - mostly as a way of easily training students en masse and quickly certifying instructors.

An Open class stays true to the traditional way of learning yoga, where the practitioner follows their own routine, under the watchful and supportive eye of the teacher, rather than following the teacher and practicing the same routine within a group.

The modern standardised approach to yoga failed to address the individual and the key concept of ‘yoga fitting the student’ instead of the ‘student fitting the yoga’.

In an Open class, a plan is specifically tailored to your body, personality, and goals, and the classroom is a safe place to come and practice at your own pace, in the presence of others doing the same, and receive instruction, support and feedback from the instructor.

Even if you don’t wish you practice yoga, you can come along and practice qigong or mobility. So long as it is related to one of the classes I offer.

For an open class to go ahead, a minimum of 3 persons is required.

The Mysore Style of Yoga was developed by Pattabhi Jois and is a traditional way of teaching. In the case of Jois, he taught Ashtanga yoga to students in Mysore. As Ashtanga follows a set sequence of poses, each student could practice at their own pace, and receive feedback, support and correction from Jois.
